HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN

Private Garden

Design: DJ Peterson and Daniel Nadeau (homeowners)

Neighborhood: Historic Filipinotown

Garden Size: 5,000 square feet

Started: 2004

Perched above the bustling thoroughfare of Beverly Blvd, this private garden brings nature into the urban core. Street side, Deergrass sprouts vigorously from holes punched in concrete, while wildflowers, sages, flannel bush and manzanitas bloom in the gardens above. This residential property was originally a hospital, which was carefully transformed it into an elegant, modern living space. Outdoor patios are framed by mature native specimens, including rare and endangered species. In the back, a parking lot has been converted into a propagation area and mini citrus orchard with views of downtown LA. Experience the beauty and connection to the local environment that native plant gardens can provide in the most urban settings.

The opportunity to participate as an individual in preserving some of these plants and of course the wildlife that depend on them I think is really important… to contribute to a broader endeavor in our own small way here right in the middle of Los Angeles.
